As you have probably heard by now, Connecticut Governor Lamont recently announced the extension of school closures through the end of the school year, due to the ongoing COVID-19 public health emergency in Connecticut. As such, Stamford Public Schools (SPS) will continue to provide education to our students through Distance Teaching & Learning through the end of the scheduled 2019-2020 school year. While none of us could have ever imagined we would end our school year in a remote learning environment, this decision is in the best interest of the safety and health of our staff, students and entire community.

The good news is that we have already begun working with our school communities to develop plans to support our Senior Class, as well as those students who would traditionally be celebrating moving up ceremonies.  The high schools, alternative programs, and Adult Education leaders have begun discussions with their school communities to develop a plan to support our 2020 Senior Class’s reimagined activities including graduation. We will share those details as we finalize them. We also recognize that it is a tradition in Stamford to celebrate our students who are transitioning from elementary to middle school and from middle to high school. We are asking families at these grade levels to send your celebration ideas to your building principals so that we can develop appropriate moving-up celebration plans.

Phase II of Distance Teaching and Learning will continue to be implemented through June 15, 2020, our official last day of classes for the 2019-2020 school year.  The goal in Phase II is continued growth toward greater student engagement, increased live and recorded lessons, as well as social emotional wellness support.

Please rest assured that our team is entrenched in reimagining summer and fall educational options.  We have dubbed Phase III as summer school learning and Phase IV as the re-entry plan for the 2020-2021 academic year. Phase III and Phase IV will be guided by the Health Department, CDC recommendations, and the Governor’s Executive Orders. We will provide detailed option plans for Phase III and Phase IV as we receive more guidance from the federal, state, and local leaders as well as the CDC, state and local health departments.

Finally, we thank you again for your continued patience and support as we navigate and make decisions in the interest of keeping our students and staff healthy and safe.

Take care,

Dr. Tamu Lucero
Superintendent
