7/10: Please Read the Latest from Superintendent Dr. Lucero on School Reopening Plans

Please take a moment to read Superintendent Dr. Lucero’s latest statement on school reopening scenarios for the 2020-2021 school year–

Dear SPS Families,
I hope everyone is enjoying the warm summer weather and your families and friends are safe and healthy.
The summer weeks seem to be moving at an accelerated pace, and we are feverishly working to develop a COVID-19 Stamford Public Schools (SPS) Re-Opening Plan for students and staff.  As I noted in my last communication, the Governor and the Connecticut State Department of Education released a document titled Adapt, Advance, Achieve: Connecticut’s Plan to Learn and Grow Together on June 29, 2020.  This document includes both requirements and guidance for local school districts to use for planning to reopen schools.
Stamford Public Schools is committed to focusing on the health and safety of our students and staff as we develop the SPS Re-Opening Plan, which must be submitted to the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) no later than July 24, 2020.
The following is an overview of CSDE requirements that the Stamford CORE Taskforce committees, comprising teachers, staff, parents, community partners, and health and safety professionals, are using to develop our plan.  The status of our public health in Stamford and Fairfield County will guide the Stamford Department of Health and state health professionals in determining which instructional model is appropriate.
  1. Full In-Person Learning with Heightened Health & Safety Protocols – if minimal rates of COVID-19 spread.  Please note that this model currently requires children to wear masks while in buildings and on buses with limited exceptions.  Also, please note that in this model, buses may operate at full capacity. As a result, we ask parents to consider the possibility of driving their children to school to reduce risk for those who do not have the option to drive.
  2. Hybrid Model of Distance Teaching and Learning and In-person Learning – if moderate rates of COVID-19 spread. Students will return to in-person school at least two days a week and will participate in distance teaching and learning for the rest of the week.
  3. Full Distance Teaching & Learning – if high rates of COVID-19 spread. Students will participate in distance teaching & learning from home and will not report to school buildings.
As part of the Hybrid and Full In-person plans, there will be a robust Distance Teaching and Learning model available for students and families. Please know that we are redeveloping our model from this spring with clear new expectations. To that end, we plan to release the Stamford Public Schools (SPS) Reopening Plan at the beginning of August with additional details.
In the meantime, please be sure to respond to the SPS Reopening Survey, by July 24, 2020, so that we can understand your needs and concerns. Go to the top right corner of the survey to choose your preferred language.
Please enjoy the last few weeks of July and stay safe and healthy.
Sincerely,
Dr. Lucero
