Be a Junior Achievement Volunteer

junior_achievement_logoJunior Achievement is a global program that teachers kids basic social studies concepts, such as explaining the concept of needing to work to fulfill needs and wants, being a good community citizen, and voting.

The following teachers have requested the Junior Achievement (JA) program for this winter. JA is led by parent volunteers:

  • Mrs. Acevedo-Vasquez
  • Mrs. Ball
  • Mrs. Hunt
  • Mrs. Muniz
  • Mrs. Origi

Additionally, a number of teachers in grades 1 through 4 have requested the program for the spring.

All curriculum materials are provided, with easy instructions for talking points. Your time commitment would involve leading five classes, 30-45 minutes each, at a time that is mutually convenient for you and the teacher. Volunteer with a friend and you could reduce the time commitment to two to three classes each. New volunteers are also required to attend a one-hour training class. JA is supported by a number of local corporations, so working parents might be able to volunteer and apply the time toward their corporate community service. Additionally, moms and dads tend to enjoy participating in Junior Achievement!

If you are interested in leading the JA program for your child’s classroom, or speak Spanish and could lead the program for one of our bilingual classrooms, please email Laura Voros to volunteer.

Pizza for Heroes on Veterans Day

Max is a fifth grader at Northeast.

Max is a fifth grader at Northeast.

Northeast 5th grader Max Fink’s campaign Pizza for Heroes will raise money for Wounded Warriors Project again this Veterans Day, 11/11/15. Max is asking families to order a pizza pie from Sorrento’s or John the Baker on Veterans Day, and these pizza restaurants will donate $1.00 from every pie sold. Last year, Max raised over $800 and he hopes to exceed that goal this year.

In addition, Max designed a t-shirt for his campaign and all proceeds from the t-shirt sale for to WWP. To order your own t-shirt, you can visit http://www.booster.com/pizza-for-heroes.

For more information, you can contact Max’s mom, Michele Haiken Fink.

Great work, Max!

If your Northeast student has any service projects he or she would like to share with the school community, please submit that news to [email protected].

bookwormThe Northeast Fall Book Fair is coming soon! Help all our Northeast children find their next favorite book! Check the schedule for when classes will visit the Book Fair, and sign up for a volunteer shift when your child will be there.

As always, there will be a table of gently-used books available so that every child leaves the book fair with a book. Please help stock this table with your donation of old books– just leave them in the school office marked “Book Fair.”
